The 2026 Destin Fishing Rodeo: A Full Month of Fishing on Destin Harbor
Events · 5 min read · Roger Ridpath
The 2026 Destin Fishing Rodeo runs all October on Destin Harbor. The daily weigh-ins behind AJ's are free to watch, boat or no boat. Here's how it works, how to enter, and where to stay minutes away.
Every October, something takes over Destin Harbor that you can watch for free, whether you have ever held a rod or not. The Destin Fishing Rodeo runs the entire month, and the scales behind AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar turn into the best free show on the Emerald Coast. Boats come in loaded, a crowd gathers, and every so often a shark or a giant tuna hits the scale and the whole dock leans in.
We are only about 15 to 20 minutes up the coast at Majestic Sun, so this one is easy to fold into a beach week. Here is how the Rodeo works, how to get in on it, and why October might be the smartest time all year to book.
What is the Destin Fishing Rodeo?
The Destin Fishing Rodeo is a month-long fishing tournament held every October on Destin Harbor, and it is one of the oldest and largest on the Gulf Coast. Destin has run it every October since 1948, back when the town billed itself as the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village." That reputation is the whole point: dozens of species, daily and overall categories, and jackpots that draw serious anglers and first-timers to the same set of docks.
When is the 2026 Destin Fishing Rodeo?
All of October. The 2026 Rodeo runs October 1 through October 31, 2026, every single day of the month. It kicks off the weekend before with the Destin Seafood Festival on the Harbor Boardwalk (September 25 to 27 in 2026), so an early-October stay can catch the tail end of the festival and the opening days of the Rodeo in one trip.
Can you watch the weigh-ins for free?
Yes, and this is the part most visitors do not realize. The daily weigh-ins are free and open to the public, every day from 10am to 7pm on the docks behind AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar on Destin Harbor. You do not need a ticket, a boat, or a fishing license to stand at the rail and watch. Afternoon is the best window, when the charter fleet comes back in. That is when the big ones hit the scale and the crowd goes quiet, then loud.
It is genuinely one of the best free things to do with kids in October. They get to see fish most people only meet in an aquarium, up close and right off the boat.
How do you enter the Destin Fishing Rodeo?
If you want to actually compete, there are a few ways in, and for most visitors it is easier than you would think:
- Fish aboard a registered charter boat. This is the simplest route. The boat handles registration, and there is no entry fee for anglers fishing on a registered vessel. You just book the trip and show up.
- Fish aboard a registered private boat. Same deal if you bring your own boat: register it with the Rodeo at least 24 hours before you weigh a fish, and anglers aboard fish for free.
- Fish from shore. Surf, pier, jetty, kayak, and paddleboard anglers can enter too. These categories take a quick registration, then you bring your catch to the scale.
Registration, rules, and the full list of registered boats live at destinfishingrodeo.org. The Rodeo also publishes a guidebook every year with every category and prize.
Do you need your own boat or gear?
No, and that is what makes the Rodeo so easy to jump into on a vacation. Destin Harbor is home to one of the largest charter fishing fleets in the country, so you can book a half-day or full-day trip, walk on with nothing but sunscreen, and let the crew put you on fish. If your catch qualifies, they will help you weigh it in. There is also a "Just for Kids" side to the Rodeo, which makes it a great first fishing memory for the little ones.
Why October is a great time to visit Miramar Beach
Here is the quiet secret of Rodeo month. October on the Emerald Coast is one of the best windows of the whole year: the Gulf is still warm enough to swim, the summer crowds have gone home, the sugar-white sand feels almost private, and nightly rates come down off their peak. You get the beach at its calmest and a month-long festival happening just up the road. Warm water, thin crowds, better prices, and a shark on the scale at sunset. That is a hard week to beat.
