October on the Emerald Coast: The Month the Locals Keep

The water is still warm, the crowds have gone home, and the calendar is somehow busier than July. Here is what is actually happening in Miramar Beach and Destin in October 2026, concerts first.
Ask anybody who lives here what the best month is and watch how fast they say October. The water is still warm enough to swim in. The summer crowd has packed up and gone back to school. And for reasons I still do not fully understand, the calendar gets busier the emptier the beach gets.
Here is what is on this year.
The concerts
The Village of Baytowne Wharf runs a free concert every Wednesday night through the month, out on the events lawn. Bring a chair, or do not, plenty of people just sit on the grass.
- October 7 is Funky Lampshades.
- October 14 is Storm Folk.
- October 21 is The Aces.
- October 28 is Forrest Williams.
I want to be straight about what these are. They are regional bands playing a free show at a resort village, not a stadium tour, and that is exactly why they are good. You wander over after dinner, you stay for two songs or two hours, and it costs you nothing.
The one with a name on it is October 10, when the Atlanta Rhythm Section plays Dogs, Bands and Beer Fest at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center. Same band that gave you "So Into You" and "Imaginary Lover." Dogs are the point as much as the music is, so it gets friendly and a little chaotic in the best way.
The Fishing Rodeo owns the whole month
The Destin Fishing Rodeo runs October 1 through 31, every single day, and if you have never watched a weigh-in at the docks you should fix that. Boats come in through the afternoon, the crowd gathers on the boardwalk, and somebody hauls up a fish the size of a person. It is free to watch. You just show up at Destin Harbor and stand there.
A few dates worth marking. The Rodeo Run 5K is October 4. Bruce Cheves Day and the Ringing of the Bell is October 16. And the awards ceremony lands November 5, just after the month closes out.
Food, wine and beer, which is most of October
The Bloody Mary Festival at The Market Shops is October 10, which is walking distance from us and exactly as advertised.
The Harvest Wine and Food Festival takes over WaterColor and Cerulean Park October 15 to 18. That one is a proper event, four days, and it draws people down from Atlanta and Birmingham.
The 18th Annual Baytowne Wharf Beer Festival is October 16 and 17. Hundreds of beers, a village built for wandering between them, and cooler weather that finally makes standing outside with a beer the right idea.
And the Grand Boulevard Farmers' Market runs every Saturday morning all month, October 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.
Arts, theatre and fireworks
The MKAF Festival of the Arts hits its 31st year on October 24 and 25 at the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village. Working artists, real booths, the kind of show where you talk to the person who made the thing.
The 39 Steps runs at Emerald Coast Theatre Company October 15 through 25. Four actors, dozens of characters, and it is very funny.
There are fireworks over HarborWalk Village every Saturday night, October 3, 10, 17 and 24.
What is happening in Miramar Beach on Halloween?
Two things, and they are ten minutes apart. Boo at Baytowne: Trick or Treat Street runs through the Village and is built for kids, with the shops handing out candy along the way. Halloween on the Harbor takes over Destin Harbor the same night and skews a little older. You can do both if you start early.
Is October a good time to visit Miramar Beach?
It is the best time, and I will argue with anybody about it. Gulf water holds its summer heat into the fall, so you are swimming in water in the high seventies while the air has finally dropped into the seventies too. The beach that had a thousand umbrellas on it in July has a hundred. Restaurants take you without a wait. Rates come down.
The tradeoff is that October is inside hurricane season, which runs through the end of November. Most Octobers here are gorgeous and nothing happens. Some are not. Watch the forecast the week before, the same way you would for anywhere on this coast, and get travel insurance if it would keep you from enjoying the trip.
How to actually see any of this
Almost everything above is within about fifteen minutes of Scenic Gulf Drive. Baytowne and the Beer Festival are at Sandestin, just east. The Fishing Rodeo, the fireworks and Halloween on the Harbor are at Destin Harbor, just west. The Market Shops and Grand Boulevard are essentially across the street.
